Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X launched
The much awaited iPhone models are here. Apple hosted a Special Event and announced the iPhone models for 2017. This is Cupertino-based company’s first-ever event at the Steve Jobs Theater. Apple announced three devices, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.
iPhone X - 64GB - $999
iPhone X (10), called as iPhone ten, features Edge-to-Edge display, with display on all four corners, glass surface at front and back. It is water and dust resistant and will be available in two colors: space gray and silver.
iPhone X features Super Retina display 5.8-inch diagonal, 2436 x 1125 resolution 2.7 million pixels, 458 ppi , fits comfortably in the hand. The display is OLED display and offers great contrast with HDR 10 and Dolby Vision support. The display features 1 million to 1 contrast ratio and carries old features such as color accuracy, 3D Touch and True Tone display.
To unlock the phone by face ID. To make face ID, TrueDepth camera system, flood illuminator, infrared camera, front camera and dot projector, ambient light sensor, proximity, speaker and microphone.
To wake up the iPhone, tap on the screen. There’s no home button, swipe up from the bottom to open. Swipe up from button to go home from an app. For multitasking, swipe up, pause for a split second and switch between apps. Press side button to talk to Siri.
When glancing, the iPhone X, it will take IR image with the help of dot projector. The IR dots will be compared by the Push Neural Networks with the mathematical model stored when creating the Face ID, to see if it is a match. It all happens in real-time. Thanks to the Apple A11 Bionic neural engine (machine learning) with Neural network technology, this chipset achieves 600 billion operations per second and real-time processing. So, the phone unlocks as fast as the Touch ID.
Face ID works even if the user’s hairstyle, glasses, hats, even with beard, at day and at night (low light). Apple claims that it cannot be faked using photographs and 3D masks. To compare with Touch ID, for a random person to unlock an iPhone, the hit ratio is 1 to 50000, whereas, for Face ID, it is 1 in a million. Face ID can also be used in Apple Pay.
Instead of swiping from bottom, in the iPhone X, we need to swipe down from the top-right corner (status bar indicator) to open the Control centre
The Messages app in iPhone X gets Animated Emojis, which Apple calls, Animojis. Using this feature, you can select a character (Eg: fox face) and start recording your conversation.
Animoji will be recorded in real time with all your expressions, your voice and tone. Then, you can send it in the chat conversation window itself. Currently, there are only handful of characters to choose from, but hopefully, we will have more characters in the coming months.
Coming to the camera department, iPhone X has 12MP dual cameras with f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures, dual optical image stabilization, quad-LED True Tone flash. This camera supports AR games.
iPhone X gets TrueDepth camera, Portrait mode selfies and a new feature, Portrait lighting.
iPhone X will run on the latest iOS 11, will be available in two memory options, 64GB and 256GB. Bookings start on October 5th and the devices will be available on November 3rd.
Apple iPhone 8
iPhone 8 retains the iPhone 7 design with glass surface in front and back. It comes in silver space gray and new gold finish. There are 7-layer color process, aerospace-grade aluminum 50% deeper strengthening layer and most durable glass ever in a smartphone, as claimed by Apple.
iPhone 8 features Retina HD display of 4.7-inch and the iPhone 8 Plus gets 5.5-inch. The noteworthy features of this display are, Color accuracy, cinema wide gamut, 3D touch technology and True Tone display.
iPhone 8 gets stereo speakers which are 25% louder, A11 BIONIC chipset under the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. six-core, 64-bit. Like the leaked information on this chipset, the six cores will likely have four small cores and two big cores, all, capable of running simultaneously.
The A11 delivers significantly faster performance as it can swap between high-performance and low-performance cores, instead of allowing them to run simultaneously.
iPhone 8 and 8 Plus also features faster GPU for 3D games, machine learning and Core tasks.
With regard to camera, like the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus gets dual 12MP camera with deeper pixels, new color filter and Optical image stabilization and f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures.
iPhone 8 Portrait mode gets Lighting effects, a beta feature which Apple claims, can deliver a portrait lighting effect achievable in studios that require multiple lights and other photographic equipments. The demo was convincing enough.
For video, iPhone 8 highest-quality video capture, apple-designed video encoder, real-time image sensor, 2 million tiles per second. It supports 4K 60 fps and Slo-mo with 1080p at 240 fps.
Like the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus supports Augmented Reality, Thanks to A11 Bionic CPU, AR games can be played, and it can also be used to watch a live baseball match with real time info of the players. Another application of AR is that, you can point the camera at the sky and see the stars information (labels) in the sky. This is in line with the patent filed by Apple on AR technology.
The sensors while playing AR games, help provide immersive experience. For instance, in the demo, when the user moved the iPhone close to the desk, the volume increased and when he moved away from the desk, the volume decreased, automatically.
As far as connectivity is concerned, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will have LTE advanced network, Bluetooth 5.0 and AirPods. With iPhone 8, the long-awaited wireless charging has been introduced. Qi open wireless standard is the technology used and Apple has partnered with mophie, Belkin and others to make these chargers available for purchase.
Apple IPhone 8 runs on iOS 11, and available in two memory options, 64GB and 256GB. Price of iPhone 8 starts at $699. For iPhone 8 Plus, like the iPhone 8, two memory choices are available> 64GB and 256GB. It costs $799. Pre-order for both the smartphones starts on September 15th, 2017.
Glimpses of the Apple Event
Apple Event started with memories of Steve Jobs and a video of the newly built Steve Jobs Theatre. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, requested all to help for hurricane-affected states via the Apple’s app channel dedicated for this cause.
During the Face ID demo, at the very first time, the Face ID failed to unlock and pass code was typed to unlock the phone. However, after minutes, the Face ID feature worked properly and the demo went on smoothly. The AR game demo was exciting and Animoji demo was cool.
Like last year, this year too, the iPhone leaked images and information were mostly accurate. Be it the names of the models (8, 8 Plus, X), price of iPhone X, delay in iPhone X shipment (Nov 17), face ID, A11 chipset, every bit of information had surfaced the internet ahead of the launch killing the surprise elements. The only gripe was that, there were no ‘Red’ color versions announced.
The long-awaited wireless charging is now on offer. As evident from the keynote, Apple seem to join the race, a bit later than others, when it comes to Augmented Reality.
About the new iPhones, the iPhone X breaks the design language of the iPhone. But the small camera and sensor area on top of the iPhone X display, feels asymmetric and may take some time getting used.
Otherwise, the iPhone X features the biggest display, 5.8-inch in iPhone history and OLED technology too. But, for Augmented Reality, Face ID and better performance, $1000 price tag makes it more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 ($929).
