AI can detect Alzheimer's disease a decade ahead

A team of Italian scientists at University of Bari, have conducted an experiment. Based on the results, they concluded that AI (Artificial Intelligence) can detect structural changes in the brain caused by Alzheimer’s disease, almost a decade before the Alzheimer’s symptoms can surface.

Currently, the AI algorithm is 86% accurate. In particular, out of the 148 brain scans provided, the AI detected mild cognitive impairment in 84% of subjects who may get affected by Alzheimer in near future.

Therefore, once made accurate, the AI algorithm can be used as a diagnostic tool for early detection of the disease. In the long run, this will likely help prevent the Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease starts from just an awareness that there is a functional decline like memory loss, but as the severity increases, can lead to 24/7 care and cripple the adult into a new born’s function. People older than 65 have high risk of getting affected. while it could affect younger people as well.
